Teddy Rosy (Fighter Build)

Teddy Rosy
Human Fighter (Two Handed Fighter Archetype)
Speak softly and carry a big stick

Teddy Rosey is all about hitting people hard.  He wields a falchion for the crit and damage, and dons O-yoroi for the AC.  Gets some sundering and critical action later on, but, for the most part, is just a crazy damage dealer.

Feats

1:   Power Attack, Weapon Focus: Falchion, Furious Focus
 2:   Cleave
 3:   Dodge
 4:   Weapon Specialization
 5:   Toughness
 6:   Vital Strike
 7:   Combat Reflexes
8:   Improved Critical (Retrain Cleave to Lunge)
 9:   Critical Focus: Falchion
10:  Greater Weapon Focus: Falchion
11:  Improved Sunder
12:  Greater Weapon Specialization: Falchion
13:  Sundering Strike
14:  Staggering Critical
15:  Blinding Critical
16:  Critical Mastery
17:  Stunning Critical
18:  Improved Initiative
19:  Iron Will
20:  Sickening Critical

Attributes

Teddy Rosy needs high strength to deal damage, and dex and con to stay alive. Wisdom helps with will saves, but shouldn't go through the roof.  Charisma and Inteligence are dump stats.

Str>Con>Dex>Wis>Int>Cha.

Point Buy 15
STR:19 (17+2)
DEX: 14
CON: 14
INT: 7
WIS:11
CHA: 7

Point Buy 20
STR:20 (18+2)
DEX: 14
CON: 14
INT: 7
WIS:11
CHA: 7

Point Buy 25
STR:20 (18+2)
DEX: 14
CON: 16
INT: 7
WIS:11
CHA: 7

Attribute advancement:  Strength all the way.

Skills

To put it lightly, skills are not the Teddy's specialty.  He will have a low intelligence score, and his 2 skills a level for being a fighter isn't really helping.  With 7 intelligence you get 2 skills.  Perception anybody?

How to Play

Get up to people and smack them.  Use Vital Strike or Cleave when you can't power attack.  Even better, lunge to get full round attacks.  At level 14 and above you get critical stuff, which is always fun.

Traits

Reactionary: +2 to initiative.  Everybody loves initiative.
Carefully Hidden: +1 to Will saves (and a minor additional bonus)

  1. How does he have a 20 AC at level 1? Isn't O-Yoroi armor too expensive to afford at 1st level?

    1. My general rule for these is optimal equipment, no magic or masterwork. For consistently I do this at level 1, even if he wouldn't be able to afford it. But, given that he can afford it shortly there-after, it shouldn't be a problem.

  2. I don't see what you're adding between level 16 and 20 that's giving you automatic crits...?

    1. At level 19, the two-handed fighting archetype gives you that ability in the form of Devastating Blow (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/fighter/archetypes/paizo---fighter-archetypes/two-handed-fighter)

    2. Ah, thanks for responding. It was my bad, I was linked here by Ssalarn, who'd claimed Teddy Rosy was a non-archetyped Fighter, and I clearly trusted their words over the second line of your article. :p

At level 19 and 20 I think I might have personally entertained keeping a scythe around to get good use out of devastating blow, and probably retrained Vital Strike for Quick Draw since I don't think it's a prerequisite. That said, introducing real-time weapon change makes it no longer a simple and straightforward fighter build.

    3. Wow - that's a fantastic idea. I tend not to give too much thought to the capstone abilities, but I have added that idea into the build given that it is so awesome.

  3. I am looking at your level 8 damage, and i think I must be missing something. With 22 Strength ( from the two level up Bonuses). I get 12+9+2+1 (2x str+Power Atk+Weapon Spec+ Weapon Training)=24 For his damage with his second attack.

    1. Hmm, I think you are right. I was probably adding an extra half strength. I've fixed it, thanks!

  4. Okay for your level 1 to hit is incorrect because you only get that damage if you use power attack and with +5 from strength +1 BAB and +1 from weapon focus it equals +7 but you get a -1 from the power attack so you attack at +6 and deal 2d4+10 damage. Level 4 damage is also incorrect i get 10+6+2 (2x str +power attack +weapon spec)= 18. The 2nd to hit on lvl 8 for the second hit is also error it is actually 1 instead of 8 (3 BAB + 6 str+ 1 focus +1 Training). Damage for lvl 16 is 14+20+4+3(2x str+2x pwr att+wp spec+wpn train)=41. Damage for lvl 20 is 14+24+4+4(2x str+2x pwr att+wp spec+wpn train)= 46. I hope me going over your math helps out

    1. Look up the furious focus feat for level 1.
You may be right about level 4, I'll have to double cheek that.
      Level 8 may actually be 9 instead of 8 (3BABA +6str +1focus +1 Training -2 Power Attack). I'll have to check that.
I think you are right about damage at 16 and 20. I made a quick change last time and I guess I shorted myself. Thanks.

  5. Hello all,
This is probably a newbie question but in your calculations for the 2 handed weapon damage you always multiply your Strength modifier by 2.
I thought it was x1,5 when attacking with 2 handed weapons or am I overlooking some feat/skill here?

  6. Why go for the O-Yoroi armor with only 14 dex, wouldnt it be better to go for fullplate for the +9 armor bonus and the 2 max dex you can get with your armor training.

  8. I'm still a bit new on this Pathfinder building a character, I've made a few before but I'm not sure why but I think I'm calculating the damage for my level 10 character very wrong as I'm no where near the damage you have calculated.

    1. Do a google search for Pathfinder DPR calculator. Something like this should work: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuxZlArJH2wxdE55TUlEamxWbF9Wa3otZi10MUM1a2c#gid=1

    1. 18-20 actually doubles to 15-20! 18-20 is three numbers (18, 19, 20) and 15-20 is six numbers (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20).

    3. Well, just make sure that you aren't being argumentative or combative with him and show him this post. As a GM myself, I can tell you he wants to make sure you have fun.

  11. You can't take Iron Will at 18 level, it's a general feat not a combat feat.

  12. Used this build but we were playing a Eastern campaign so I switched the falchion for a nodachi and it was amazing! Started at level 10 and went to 20. Great build

  14. While I like the look and stats and possible damage this build can bring. I was just wondering why the Falchion? is it purely because it can Crit on an 18-20?

    1. High Crit range, two handed weapon, and chunky damage.

  15. Another question,

What do you think of the idea of sacrificing sickening critical in order to have one level of barbarian at the beginning? Would the ability to rage be beneficial at all?

    1. Without running the numbers, I would guess that it's about the same. You do get some great stuff from the fighter archetype that you don't want to delay though.
